“I’ve found purpose, friendship, and joy at The Meadows.” Meet Marie.

When Marie began experiencing the early stages of vascular dementia, she made the decision to move to The Meadows care home, where she could receive extra care and support. Since then, her spirits have been lifted, and she’s also rediscovered a sense of purpose and joy in her daily life. Surrounded by new friends and activities that bring her fulfilment, this is Marie’s story…

Originally from Wirksworth, Marie spent much of her career as a secretary for a solicitor’s firm, where her attention to detail and love for organisation made her invaluable. These qualities have continued to shine through during her time at The Meadows. After a chat with Vicki, our Admin Manager, Marie was excited to share her skills and began volunteering in the office. Now, she spends several hours each week assisting with paperwork, helping with administrative tasks, and providing support wherever needed.

This is all part of our Montessori approach, which encourages residents to take on roles that reflect their interests and past experiences. For Marie, being part of the office team has brought a renewed sense of accomplishment and purpose.

However, Marie’s caring nature doesn’t stop at the office. She has also taken one of her fellow residents under her wing, making sure her friend starts the day with a good breakfast and feels encouraged to join in with activities. Marie’s thoughtfulness and genuine concern for others make her a cherished member of our community.

In addition to her office work, Marie enjoys taking part in many of the activities available at The Meadows. She’s a regular member of the book club, where she loves discussing stories with others and exploring new genres. Her creative side comes alive in our craft and baking sessions, where Marie also has a talent for homemade cakes. Marie also loves our days out, whether visiting Matlock Baths or moseying around the local shops.

Marie’s two sons, who visit her regularly, are pleased to see how engaged and happy she is at The Meadows. Her active involvement in the home, from her office work to her care for others and her participation in various activities, has made a remarkable difference in her overall well-being.

Her son, Kevin, said, “We’re so glad we found The Meadows. We heard about it through word of mouth and knew it was the right place for her when we arrived. The team was so welcoming. Mum really enjoys being at The Meadows. It’s been so good for her mental wellbeing and seeing her interact with others, particularly her close-knit friend group that she’s made. I’ve worked closely with Janet, the Dementia Care Coach at The Meadows, who has walked me through how positive risk-taking can encourage Mum to gain purpose and independence. We even rearranged Mum’s wardrobe for her so it was less distressing, and it worked. It’s amazing really. I’ve never known a home so committed to wellbeing.”

Marie’s journey at The Meadows is a true testament to the benefits of our Montessori-inspired approach. By tapping into her past skills and embracing new experiences, she has found new ways to stay active, connected, and fulfilled. We are so fortunate to have Marie as part of our Meadows family.
