“I was on end-of-life care, and now my life is transformed.” Meet Joyce.

When Joyce was told she needed end-of-life care, the next step was to move into a care home. A year and a half later, Joyce is overjoyed with her experience at Hazelgrove and is in better health than ever! This is Joyce’s story…

Joyce moved into Hazelgrove care home on 25th July 2023 at the loving suggestion of her daughter, Deborah. After exploring many other care homes in the area, Deborah knew that this was the best place for her mum to find the care and comfort she deserved. Joyce didn’t realise at the time just how transformative the experience would be for her; Hazelgrove would become not just a home but a place of renewed purpose, joy, and friendship.

At the time, her health was fragile, and she was on an end-of-life pathway. “I didn’t think I had much time left,” Joyce recalls. Yet, since her arrival, her life has taken a remarkable turn. She now wakes up each morning excited for the day ahead, embracing activities, friendships, and quiet moments that bring meaning to her life.

One of the most impactful aspects of life at Hazelgrove for Joyce has been the variety of activities available. Whether it’s a lively group event or a peaceful afternoon in her room, Joyce has found that every day brings something new to enjoy.

“I’ve particularly grown fond of arts and crafts,” she shares. “It’s been such a wonderful way to express myself and explore new ideas. I never imagined I’d find so much joy creating something with my hands.”

Socialising has been another cornerstone of Joyce’s newfound happiness. At Hazelgrove, she’s built lasting friendships that mean the world to her. “I love the company of others, sharing stories and laughter. It’s such a wonderful change from being alone,” she says. Mealtimes, especially when her favourite dish – fish and chips – is served, are filled with reminiscence and camaraderie.

Joyce has always been passionate about cooking, and at Hazelgrove, she’s been able to rediscover this love. “There’s nothing like putting on my white chef’s apron and hat and diving into baking or preparing something delicious,” she says. The simple joy of creating in the kitchen has brought back fond memories of her younger days and given her a renewed sense of purpose.

Joyce treasures her memories, often reflecting on her days as a dinner lady at Henry Mellish School. “I spent so many happy times there,” she says, recalling a day when she and a friend dressed up in fancy dresses and had an unforgettable time.

One of Joyce’s most meaningful experiences at Hazelgrove was on Remembrance Day. She created a beautiful picture frame featuring a photo of her brother, a Second World War soldier. “Sharing stories about his bravery with my Hazelgrove family was so touching,” she recalls. This moment allowed her to honour his legacy in a deeply personal and moving way.

Last year, Joyce reached a milestone: her 99th birthday. Surrounded by friends and staff, the celebration was unforgettable. “I’ve always believed that age is just a number,” she says. “It’s how you feel at heart that truly matters. Hazelgrove makes me feel young and full of life every single day.”

For Joyce, Hazelgrove is more than just a care home. “It’s a family,” she says. “Here, I’ve rediscovered myself, built new memories, and found a place where I can truly thrive.”

Joyce’s story is a testament to the transformative power of a supportive and nurturing environment. At Hazelgrove, she has found not only care but also purpose, friendship, and joy—a truly beautiful life.
