Meals for residents with swallowing difficulties

At Milford Care, we’re proud to lead the way in transforming mealtimes for residents living with swallowing difficulties or dysphagia. We believe that food should be nourishing, visually appealing and above all, enjoyable – no matter your dietary needs.

Revolutionising the IDDSI level 4 pureed diet

Many individuals in care homes are prescribed an IDDSI level 4 pureed diet due to conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke or other swallowing-related challenges. Traditionally, meals for these individuals are thickened with agents and served in an unrecognisable, unappealing form. At Milford Care, we do things differently.

Our chefs use an innovative, specialist approach to create delicious, fresh meals that are both safe and satisfying. Whole, fresh ingredients are cooked until just al dente, preserving vital nutrients, then blended into a thick, smooth consistency without adding water or thickeners. The food is then piped into shapes that resemble the original ingredients, making the dish instantly recognisable.

From family favourites like fish, chips and peas to comforting classics such as cottage pie, every meal is crafted to deliver flavour, nutrition and dignity.

Encouraging health and wellbeing in care homes

Our unique method of preparing meals supports health and wellbeing in care homes by:

  • Promoting regular and safe eating habits for those with dysphagia
  • Maintaining essential vitamins and minerals in every dish
  • Encouraging independence and dignity at the dining table
  • Enhancing mealtime enjoyment through visual appeal and familiar flavours

This approach has already led to real improvements in the eating habits and well-being of our residents. As Group Catering Manager, Richard Glover, explains:

“We’ve seen residents gain back their appetite and confidence. The food looks and tastes how they remember it – that makes all the difference.”

Designed for dignity, built on expertise

At Milford Care, our chefs have received specialist training in texture-modified diets to ensure consistency, safety and appeal in every dish. Unlike traditional food moulds that require thickeners and often reduce taste and nutritional value, our new method offers a fresher, more beneficial alternative.

By serving meals that are both safe and satisfying, we reduce the risks of malnutrition, weight loss and choking, helping residents on a pureed diet eat well and enjoy food again.
