‘I got to relive my dream as a policeman.’ Meet Larry

In January 2024, retired policeman Larry moved into Milford House to start a new chapter. Leaving the force was something he never wanted to forget, so Dementia Care Coach Kirsty reconnected him with the force. Kirsty tells Larry’s story…

“On 5 January 2024, we welcomed Larry into our Milford House care home in Belper. He settled in incredibly well and got stuck into all the activities, particularly enjoying the exercise classes and art sessions.

“As part of my Dementia Care Coach role, I like to sit and chat with our residents and learn more about their lives: where they grew up, what they enjoy doing in their spare time, what they did for a living, etc. I learned a lot and enjoyed every minute of it. Larry was particularly fascinating. He told me all about his time in the Police force, patrolling Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, and even explained the times when he was the ‘runner’ to make the arrest. It was like listening to a real-life version of Police Interceptors!

“Larry spoke about his time in the force with passion, sharing stories of his 30 years of dedicated service, and dreamed he could go back in the patrol car once more.

“I contacted PCSO Bev Barnes, who agreed to do a surprise visit to Milford House in the patrol car. Larry’s face was a picture when he saw who was outside. It made me well up with pride. He got into the car, put on the blues and twos, and chatted with Bev about his time as an officer. Larry was shocked at just how modern the police car was, which led him to reminisce about the simplicity of police cars in the 80s. He told us of his many adventures, a smile on his face the whole time.

“After the trip out, Larry couldn’t wipe the smile from his face, saying he’d had the greatest day ever and was very thankful to the team for organising it.

“Larry’s experience with the local police gave him his confidence back, as well as the feeling of purpose and independence. He continues to recollect his special day and says he’ll remember it for the rest of his life.”
