Visit Report from Healthwatch England

Milford Care are proud to publish the results of a recent visit from Healthwatch England.

Healthwatch England is a national independent champion for consumers and users of health and social care in England. They have powers to ensure the consumers' voice is heard by those who commission, deliver and regulate Health and Care services.

All their findings are passed onto relevant government bodies and local authorities in England, and Healthwatch England reports to Parliament every year. The evidence they gather is used to identify national consumer trends and issues, and ultimately influences national policy.

On 12th February 2014 Milford House, was visited after being randomly selected, alongside 9 other Care Homes who had been awarded the Derbyshire County Council Bronze Dignity Award. The purpose of the visit was to observe ‘What good care looks like’ within a care home setting.

The report summarised:

“The staff at Milford House provide a holistic style approach to care, placing their residents at the centre of all they do by taking into consideration the personal preferences of their residents.

Milford House appears to be is well run care home in which staff, residents and their families came across as happy, safe and relaxed. Staff/resident interaction appears good, as does staff management. The Dignity Principles are well understood and put into practice on a regular, daily basis as a matter of fact and this results in residents who feel safe, happy, not afraid to bring up complaints and issues when necessary and feel respected and dignified with choice in all their daily activities, resulting in feelings of wellbeing.”

Milford House Care Home

Milford, Derbyshire

Elegant staircase

A retirement home of elegance and distinction, Milford House, near Belper and Duffield, was formerly the country residence of Jedediah Strutt, a leading pioneer industrialist of the 18th century.

This beautiful grade II listed building and its adjoining Coach House were transformed into a tastefully renovated retirement home in 1985. Today, following a major refurbishment in 2016/17, its distinct Georgian elegance is coupled with a warm, friendly and tranquil atmosphere.

“Thank you for looking after my mother so well during the last nine weeks of her life. We were extremely impressed by the patience and dedication you all show to those entrusted to your care.”

“We are so grateful to you all for the loving kindness you gave to (mum) during the two years she was with you. Everyone was patient and unfailingly kind and you all treated her as if she was ‘your grandma’…. The way you wrapped us in what was a blanket of kindness made it so much easier for us. I am so grateful that we entrusted (mum) to your care. She was happy and was cared for so well.”

“I wanted you to know how much we valued the care of my mother by all the staff at the Coach House. Although she was only with you for a short period of time, it was such a relief knowing she was safe and well cared for in a kind and respectful way… I was so glad to see her coming out of her room for her meals and to watch TV when she had become so isolated in her previous establishment… the staff were all really friendly and supportive of me which I appreciated”

“I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you and all the staff involved in looking after my mother. It is not an easy job and I appreciate all that you do”

“To all the caring angels. Many thanks for all the wonderful care you gave to our mum. We were so pleased how happy she was with all of you. Our mum made friends in her stay at Milford, this gave her the extra strength to carry on longer than expected”

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the love and care given to my mum during her time with you. She settled very well and you made mum and our family very welcome. The day mum passed away the support, love and care we had was beyond words and you did what you promised – gave mum love and dignity right to the end and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for that. Mum loved you all, enjoyed the fun and laughs and I know taught you a few good sayings. Once again thank you so very much. You are all ‘simply the best’”

Daughter of a resident, April 2014

“I would just like to give you all the biggest thank you ever for your wonderful care and support for [My Mother] and myself through a very difficult time. Everyone was kind, gentle understanding, and gave me lots of cuddles! We want to keep in touch with you and will always give you our support – we feel you are part of our family. Our love to you all and once again a huge thank you, you are all ‘one in a million’.”

“I write on behalf of the family to say a very big THANK YOU for the care given to [My Uncle]. He was with you for over 5 years and always said how much he appreciated the way in which you all enriched his life, from the cleaners who would chat to him as they went about their work to the excellent attention from the nursing staff. On the many times I asked if he was happy with you it was always a resounding ‘yes’ and the knowledge of this eased our minds greatly. Words are somewhat inadequate but please be aware of how grateful we are for making the years he spent with you so comfortable and I am sure he came to look upon the Coach House as his home and all staff his family.”

“…thank all of you for the wonderful way in which you looked after my mother during the seventeen years she was at Milford House. She could not have been better looked after and I appreciate all you did for her. She was very happy and content at Milford House and this was of great comfort to me. I do not feel she could possibly have been better looked after.“

“I want to thank all the staff at Milford House [Coach House] for the exceptional care given to my father during his stay there. My father was initially reluctant to enter a nursing home and his condition meant that he sometimes presented a challenge to those who cared for him on a daily basis but he was always treated with respect, kindness and affection, all of which was given unconditionally. At the end of his life my father was treated lovingly and compassionately, with the upmost professionalism. I will never forget the kindness shown to me on the day my father died.”
